Schabath Joins Nighthawks as Director of Communications, Athletics

DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia has announced Brendan Schabath as the new Director of Communications, Athletics.  He will serve as the primary communications contact for the department's 13 sports as well as the executive director of the Nighthawk Sports Network.

DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia has announced Brendan Schabath as the new Director of Communications, Athletics.  He will serve as the primary communications contact for the department's 13 sports as well as the executive director of the Nighthawk Sports Network.
 
The Birmingham, Mich. native arrives at UNG following a brief stint as the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications at NCAA Division II UVA Wise where he served as the primary media contact for volleyball, men's basketball, softball, lacrosse, men's and women's golf and men's and women's tennis. Additionally, was the broadcast voice for radio and FloSports broadcasts throughout the year.

"I am unbelievably excited to join one of the premier athletic departments in the country here at North Georgia," said Schabath. "Every interaction I've had with the school so far has been jaw droppingly impressive and makes me increasingly anxious to become a part of the Nighthawk family. I can already tell this is a proud institution filled with tradition, excellence, character and kind-hearted people. That's the kind of place I want to be." 
 
Prior to UVA Wise he served as the sports director at WDBM in East Lansing, Mich. where he oversaw managing and executing all operations with the sports department. Additionally, he spent three years as the student play-by-play voice for men's basketball at Michigan State.
 
Schabath also has extensive experience in sports writing. The journalism major wrote feature stories on Michigan State athletes while also having written game recaps and game previews.

"Brendan is a five-tool communications professional that will be able to amplify the North Georgia Athletics' story to our external partners," stated Lee Glenn, Senior Associate Athletic Director, External Operations. "We are looking forward to him expanding our Nighthawk Sports Network as well as leveraging new communications platforms."
 
Additionally, the communications professional has worked outside of athletics. Schabath was invited to Harvard and the Christopher Georges Conference on College Journalism for his work in covering the Feb. 13, 2023 campus shooting that occurred at Michigan State.
 
The 2023 Earle Robinson Award winner for outstanding sports broadcast journalism has more than 500 live broadcasts to his credit from radio and television. In his career, he has broadcast men's and women's basketball, soccer, volleyball, hockey, baseball, softball and lacrosse.
 
Most recently, Schabath served as a broadcast assistant with the Detroit Tigers where he worked closely with the Tigers public relations staff and assisted home and away broadcasters with daily needs and information.
 
Schabath graduated from Michigan State in 2023 with a degree in journalism.
