Vajda Holds Four Shot Lead, No. 1 Nighthawks Ahead By Eight Strokes Heading Into Final Day At 2024 PBC Championship
AUGUSTA, Ga. – After leading the field by six shots after day one, the No. 1 University of North Georgia men's golf team extended its lead over the field on day two of the 2024 Peach Belt Conference Championship on Saturday in Augusta, Ga.
As a team, the Nighthawks went eight-under-par on the day, bested only by Columbus State who sits in second place after going 10-under on day two.
UNG leads the entire field at 19-under overall. CSU follows in second place at 11-under as the only real team in contention after two days. In third it's a three way tie between No. 3 Georgia Southwestern, No. 10 Lander and No. 13 USC Aiken who all sit at one-under overall.
Leading the way for head coach Bryson Worley's squad in the first two days has been graduate student Jack Vajda. The Canton, Ga. native posted a six-under-par 66 in his first round and repeated that performance in round two. Vajda has yet to bogey a hole in the tournament as he holds a four shot lead on the individual leaderboard at 12-under.
Vajda utilized a stretch of three straight birdies at 11, 12 and 13 to get to five-under for the round. A birdie again at the par-5 17th put him at six-under for the second time in as many days.
Junior Hughes Threlkeld also went low for the Nighthawks on day two. Threlkeld birdied three holes and eagled another to shoot a three-under 69 for the round. His eagle at the par-4 17th was the only eagle of the day on Forest Hills Golf Club's penultimate hole.
Threlkeld rests in a three way tie at T3 on the individual leaderboard at six-under overall for the tournament.
With an even-par 72 on Saturday, PBC All-Conference Second Team selection and junior Ethan Day is T14 overall for the tournament at even-par.
Graduate student Will Chamlbess follows for UNG at T17 and one-over in total after a three-over 75 in his second round.
Rounding out the leaderboard for the Nighthawks is sophomore Hunter Smith at T20 after he shot a one-over 73 with five birdies on Saturday. Smith is two-over in total for the tournament.
Vajda will look to continue his hot play and hopefully lead the Nighthawks to their first PBC Championship in program history when he tees off in the final group tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 21 at 10:22 a.m. Smith will be the first Nighthawk to tee off in the final five groups as he heads out at 9:50 a.m.
