No. 8 Nighthawks Fall On The Road At No. 5 Columbus State
COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 8 University of North Georgia men's tennis team lost a tough road match 5-2 at No. 5 Columbus State Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Nighthawks fell to 11-6 overall and 2-2 in Peach Belt Conference play.
Despite a 6-1 win from senior Joaquin Benoit and junior Robin Eldin in the #1 doubles spot, UNG dropped the #2 and #3 doubles matches.
In the #2 contest, senior Giulio Sassi and freshman Marcos Castellanos fell to Intercollegiate Tennis Association men's doubles No. 18 Justin Welz and Camilo Cano in a close 7-5 match.
Cougars Benedek Szombathelyi and Elias Peter also escaped with a 7-5 win over sophomore Tyler Cunningham and senior Christopher Cahour.
Trailing 1-0 in the match heading into singles play, ITA No. 45 singles player Benoit snagged an easy 6-1 win over Welz to even the match at 1-1.
However, it would not be enough as CSU went on to win the #5, #6 and #2 singles matches to clinch the victory.
Cahour did pick up a 7-6 (7-3 tiebreaker), 6-3 win in the #4 match over Szombathelyi to secure the only other point for the Nighthawks.
Now UNG will return home to the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 20 to celebrate Senior Day against Georgia College. The Nighthawks will start the match at 1 p.m. and honor their three seniors prior to the start.
