Offensive Struggles Lead To Third Straight Loss for UNG Women's Basketball

DAHLONEGA – For the third game in a row, a cold shooting night was the perpetrator of a loss for the University of North Georgia women's basketball team as Saturday saw the Nighthawks fall to Augusta, 92-62 for UNG's fourth loss in the last five games.

DAHLONEGA – For the third game in a row, a cold shooting night was the perpetrator of a loss for the University of North Georgia women's basketball team as Saturday saw the Nighthawks fall to Augusta, 92-62 for UNG's fourth loss in the last five games.

The Jaguars started the game at a blistering pace, scoring 11 of the game's first 12 points. In the first quarter alone, Augusta went 10-for-18 (56%) from the floor to lead 25-10 after 10 minutes.

UNG (15-11, 8-8 PBC) kept pace with the Jaguars in the second and third quarters.

The Nighthawks went 12-for-28 (43%) from the floor in the middle quarters. They matched Augusta on the scoreboard 39-39 over the 20 minute period, but entered the fourth quarter still trailing 64-49.

The Jaguars ran away with the game in the fourth quarter thanks to a quarter of scorers dropping 14 or more points.

Junior guard Autumn Phillips led the way with 19 points while senior guard Tomiyah Alford followed with 16. Junior guard Mone Florence went 3-for-6 deep en route to a 15-point performance.

Senior forward Yamani Paul was aggressive getting to the free throw line, going 9-for-12 at the stripe contributing to her 14 points.

Eleven of the 12 Augusta (19-7), 13-3 PBC) players that saw the floor tallied at least one point in the box score in the 30-point victory.

For UNG, junior forward Emily Trushel had a team-high 13 points and eight rebounds despite only playing 20 minutes. Trushel was burdened by foul trouble early in the second half, limiting the Nighthawks' ability to battle back in the game.

Perhaps the biggest performance of the night for head coach Buffie Burson's squad came from freshman forward Ava McGlockton.

McGlockton, who had only played 14 minutes over four games in total prior to Saturday, dropped a career high 14 points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes for UNG. She went 4-for-7 from the floor and 6-for-8 from the free throw line while adding her first block of the season on defense.

The Nighthawks now look to end the season on a high note as they'll celebrate Senior Night during the program's final home game of the season next Wednesday, Feb. 28. USC Aiken is on the docket for a 5:30 p.m. tip from Lynn Cottrell Arena at the UNG Convocation Center. Seniors Macey Gregg and Lacie McCoy will be honored prior to tip-off.
