No. 23 Nighthawks Finish Third In Bracket Challenge
HOMER, Ga. – The No. 23 University of North Georgia women's golf team finished in third place in the 2nd Annual Bracket Challenge on Tuesday.
After day one's competition in the quarterfinal and semifinals round was halted before completion due to darkness, the Nighthawks started the morning by finishing their matchup with top seeded Findlay.
The Oilers squeezed out a 3-2 win to advance to the championship thanks to a trio of rounds below par from Hayley Dye, May Kelly Mulcahy and Gabby Woods. The two wins from UNG came from freshman Abby Franks and junior Jadin Ware but were not enough to overcome Findlay's low-shooting trio.
The loss sent Findlay into the championship match against second-seeded Lee while fourth-seeded UNG faced sixth-seeded Catawba in the third place match.
It was in the third place match that the Nighthawks swept the Indians 5-0 to pick up the win.
In a rainy final round, no one from either side finished below par, but UNG had four of its five golfers finish with a 79 or better to help lead to the sweep. Graduate student Amari Smith led the way for UNG with a four-over-par 76 to defeat Catawba's Maddy Vogan by eight strokes.
Senior Danielle Humphrey pulled out a very close win in match #1 for the Nighthawks. In a back and forth match that started on hole 10, Humphrey's late surge and steady play helped lead to the one stroke victory. She made the turn at 1 down through nine and subsequently dropped another shot on the first hold.
Humphrey then trailed by a stroke with just three holes to play. With pars at holes seven and eight, Humphrey pulled in front by a shot as Catawba's Chloe Crane bogeyed both holes. The two competitors parred the final ninth as Humphrey secured the win.
With the win, the Nighthawks locked up a third place finish, marking their second time finishing in the top-three in the event's second year.
Findlay took home the top spot for the second time as well, defeating second seeded Lee 5-0 in the championship match. Catawba followed UNG in fourth and in fifth was Grand Valley State with a 4-1 win over West Georgia in sixth. Columbus State took home seventh place after beating the UNG "B"/Individuals team 3-2 in the final round.
