Riner Named PBC Women's Golfer of the Week
DAHLONEGA -- No. 20 University of North Georgia women's golf freshman Ellie Jane Riner was named as the Peach Belt Conference Women's Golfer of the Week after an impressive outing as the Nighthawks hosted the 11th Annual LeeAnn Noble Memorial on Monday and Tuesday.
Riner, despite being a freshman, paved the way to a historic week for UNG as it hosted its yearly event at Achasta Golf Club last week.
Riner's opening-round 68 paired with rounds of 71 and 72 to close the tournament helped her to a T-6 finish in just her third collegiate competition ever.
Riner's four-under 68 on Monday is tied as the third-best 18-hole score in program history. Her tournament finish at five-under-par is the second-best 54-hole score in UNG women's golf history.
The rookie is already making waves in the college golf world with placements of T-14, T-5 and now T-6 to start her career. Through three tournaments and nine rounds, Riner is averaging 73 strokes per round. That mark is just 0.12 shots worse than the program single-season scoring record set by Megan Sabol in the 2019-20 season. Her efforts at Achasta led the Nighthawks to set new program 18-hole (-10) and 54-hole (-11) program scoring records.
Riner becomes the 30th UNG golfer and first freshman since Maddie Ananthasane in 2021 to win the conference's weekly award.
Riner and the Nighthawks are now preparing to take part in the Nemacolin Intercollegiate hosted by No. 2 Findlay at the Nemacolin Resort on Oct. 21 and 22.
