Linnikova Named PBC Women's Tennis Player Of The Week
DAHLONEGA -- For the fourth time this season, No. 2 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis senior Angelina Linnikova has been named the Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
The ITA women's singles No. 7-ranked Linnikova defeated No. 1 Ashleigh Simes 7-6 (9-7 tiebreaker), 6-4 of Lee on Saturday in the 2nd Annual Scenic City College Tennis Spring Break Showcase.
Linnikova exacted revenge against the nation's top-ranked singles player after falling to Simes in the ITA Cup Women's Singles National Championship back in the fall. That Oct.12 loss to Simes was the last time Linnikova suffered a loss in a singles match.
She is now 9-0 in singles this fall with four wins coming against players ranked in the top-5 of the ITA's national rankings. Since the start of the fall season, Linnikova is 5-0 against top-25 singles opponents.
With this week's honor, Linnikova has won won the conference's weekly award in four out of five weeks this season. She is the first player in program history to win the award four times in a season and the first in conference history to do so since Lena Lutzeier from Armstrong State won it four times in 2017. Linnikova has now won the award seven times in her career.
The Nighthawks take the court again today in the 2nd Annual Scenic City College Tennis Spring Break Showcase at 4 p.m. against Lees-McRae in Chattanooga, Tenn.
