No. 19 Nighthawks In Second Place After Day One At SoCon Championship
STATESBORO, Ga. – The No. 19 University of North Georgia (UNG) rifle team sits in second place out of eight teams after day one of the Southern Conference (SoCon) Championship in Statesboro, Ga.
Teams only competed in the Smallbore discipline of the SoCon Championship Saturday as the two-day event will end with the Air Rifle competition on Sunday.
With a combined score of 2,272 points, UNG sits in second place behind No.4 Georgia Southern who posted a score of 2,334 on day one.
The Nighthawks sit just ahead of No. 20 Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) at 2,260 points followed by VMI in fourth place with 2,236 points.
Junior shooter Maya Cameron advanced to the SoCon Finals Saturday as she led the way for UNG with a Smallbore score of 578 with 26 centers. Cameron's score was the fourth-best of any shooter in the competition on Saturday.
Freshman Brianna Walter came in with the second-best Smallbore score for UNG with 567 points as sophomore Courtney Allison followed closely behind with 564. Freshman Wyatt Hicks finished with 563 points while sophomore Corbin Jockers posted a 561.
The Nighthawks are in prime position to finish in the top three of the SoCon Championship for the ninth consecutive year. UNG can win the event tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 9 for the first time since 2021.
