No. 8 Nighthawks Down GCSU 7-0 On Senior Day

DAHLONEGA – The No. 8 University of North Georgia men's tennis team ended the regular season in victorious fashion after a 7-0 win at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek Saturday. The Nighthawks downed Georgia College on Senior Day to end the regular season with a 12-6 overall record and a 3-2 record in Peach Belt Conference play.

DAHLONEGA – The No. 8 University of North Georgia men's tennis team ended the regular season in victorious fashion after a 7-0 win at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek Saturday. The Nighthawks downed Georgia College on Senior Day to end the regular season with a 12-6 overall record and a 3-2 record in Peach Belt Conference play. 

UNG ends the regular season in third place in the PBC and will hold the third seed in the upcoming PBC Tournament next weekend at Columbus State. 

Seniors Joaquin Benoit, Giulio Sassi and Christopher Cahour were honored before the match and all three celebrated wins during the match.

Sassi and freshman Marcos Castellanos rolled to a 6-2 win in the #2 doubles match. Then, Benoit, paired with junior Robin Eldin, picked up a 6-3 win in the #1 doubles spot to clinch the doubles point for UNG. 

In singles, Benoit dominated GCSU's Jorge Robinson 6-1, 6-1 for the quick victory. The Mar del Plata, Argentina native ended the season with a 12-2 singles record this season. That record results in an .857 winning percentage for Benoit, which currently ranks second all-time in UNG men's tennis history as postseason play is around the corner. 

Sophomore Eliseo Alcalde then grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 win in the #6 singles match to give UNG a 3-0 lead in the match.

Sassi followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the #2 spot, clinching the victory for the Nighthawks. 

As the match continued, Cahour also grabbed a win for himself in the #4 singles match with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Bobcat Braxton Wright.

Eldin and Castellanos rounded out the singles play with wins in the #3 and #5 singles contests. 

The Nighthawks, led by head coach Kent Norsworthy, will now travel to Columbus, Ga. for the PBC Tournament next weekend, hosted by No. 5 Columbus State. UNG will be the three seed in the three day tournament that begins Friday, Apr. 26. The PBC league office will announce matchups and match times at a later date during the week.
