No. 30 UNG Sweeps Augusta With 8-2 Win In Finale
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 30 University of North Georgia (UNG) baseball completed a road sweep at Augusta with an 8-2 victory Sunday that was halted in the sixth inning due to rain.
The completed game gives UNG (24-9, 13-2 Peach Belt) its fourth PBC sweep of the season after taking down the Jaguars (8-26, 5-10 Peach Belt). The Nighthawks out-scored Augusta 55-8 in the weekend set.
While Sunday's game was closer than its two predecessor's in the series, UNG still came away with a comfortable victory.
The Nighthawks did so thanks, in part, to the third home run of the year for redshirt freshman Nicholas Stinson.
The redshirt rookie belted a fourth-inning grand slam over the right field that transformed a 3-1 pitching duel into a 7-1 rout.
As the rain began to fall in the later innings, the Jaguars earned a run with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
However, an RBI groundout in the fifth from junior center fielder Andrews Opata gave UNG its eighth and final run of the six-run victory.
Senior outfielder Jorge Arispuro contributed in a major way on Sunday as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a go-ahead RBI double in the second inning.
On the mound it was senior right-handed pitcher Dylan Noce who started the contest for the Nighthawks. He twirled 3.1 innings on Sunday with eight scattered hits, two runs allowed, one walk and two strikeouts.
Junior righty Matthew Heard entered the game in relief in the fourth inning and threw 1.2 clean innings with just one hit and three strikeouts. Heard has struck out three or more batters in eight of his 14 appearances this year.
With 13 wins in its last 15 games, UNG returns home this week for a Tuesday night matchup against Anderson on April 1. First pitch from Bob Stein Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park begins at 5 p.m.
