No. 2 Nighthawks Victorious In GCSU Bobcat Invitational
EATONTON, Ga. – The No. 2 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's golf team won the GCSU Bobcat Invitational with a combined team score of 1-over 841 at The Golf Club at Cuscowilla On Lake Oconee on Tuesday.
The victory marks UNG's third of the season and the first since the fall campaign of the season.
The Nighthawks beat out Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) No. 3 West Florida by two strokes while finishing eight shots ahead of No. 8 Lee and 12 strokes in front of No. 11 USC Aiken.
Senior Ethan Day and junior Hunter Smith led the scoring over the 54-hole event as both golfers tied for eighth place at 1-over for the tournament.
After shooting the second-lowest round of the tournament on Monday, a 4-under 66, Smith finalized his two-day scorecard with an even-par 70 on Tuesday to earn his second top-10 finish of the season.
Day's fourth top-10 finish of the year and second straight came after he posted his first sub-par round of the invitational with a 1-under 69 in the finale. Day leads the Nighthawks with 14 rounds under par so far this season.
In 12th place was sophomore Colby Bennett who used a pair of birdies in the final round to battle to a 1-over 71 to conclude his tournament performance. The young sophomore has not finished worse than 19th place in seven events this year in his first full season in the lineup for UNG.
Senior Hughes Threlkeld had the best day of any Nighthawk on Tuesday as he tied Smith's team-low round of the tournament with a 4-under 66 in the final round. Threlkeld finished in 16th place on the 74-player leaderboard.
UNG now had two events remaining before postseason play starts. The first of which is the Tennessee River Rumble, set to take place March 24-25 in Lenoir City, Tenn. at Windriver Golf Club.
