No. 2 UNG In Second Place Ahead Of Final Round At Las Vegas Desert Classic
LAS VEGAS – The No. 2 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's golf team resides in second place in the 20-team field at the Las Vegas Desert Classic at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder Creek, Nev. after play on Monday.
Day one of the event was canceled Sunday due to high winds and low visibility. The field stacked with 10 of the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) top-25 teams was forced to play 36 of the event's 54 holes on Monday.
The Nighthawks combined to shoot an 11-under par 565 as a team on Monday. UNG trails only No. 1 Colorado Christian (CCU) which leads the field by eight strokes at 19-under.
No. 6 Lincoln Memorial sits three shots behind the Nighthawks at 8-under, while Cal State Monterey Bay (7-under) and No. 8 Lee (5-under) round out the top 5.
Senior Ethan Day headlined the first day of play for UNG as he posted a 2-under 70 in round one followed by a 3-under 69 in round two at the 7,421-yard, par 72 Boulder Creek GC. Day sits in a tie for fourth place at 5-under overall, seven shots behind CCU's Adam Duncan who leads the field at 12-under.
All three other Nighthawk scoring competitors sit inside the top 15 of the individual leaderboard in a five-way tie for 15th place.
Sophomore Colby Bennett and graduate student Jack Vajda each posted a 72 in round one and a 70 in round two to close the day at 2-under.
Junior Hunter Smith carded a pair of 1-under 71s in the first two rounds to also finish in a tie for 15th at day's end.
UNG will look for its third win of the season when the event concludes tomorrow, Tuesday, Mar. 4 with the final 18 holes.
