Knowles Named PBC Freshman of the Week
DAHLONEGA -- No. 8 University of North Georgia (UNG) softball freshman catcher Carleigh Knowles has been named as the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week the league office announced Monday.
Knowles once again dominated at the dish last week for the eighth-ranked Nighthawks. Over five road games between Wingate and Flagler, Knowles combined to go 8-for-19 (.421) at the plate with two doubles, two home runs, seven runs scored and five RBI.
She had a hit in all five games and recorded multi-hit games in both outings at Wingate and the opener at Flagler.
In her first year, Knowles currently leads the league in RBI at 38 while ranking second in homers (10) and doubles (11), third in slugging percentage (.818) and on-base plus slugging (1.259), fourth in runs scored (34) and eighth in batting average (.404).
With Monday's announcement, Knowles has now twice been named the conference Freshman of the Week to go along with her Player of the Week honor which she earned back on March 3. Knowles is now just the fourth player in program history, and the third in as many seasons, to be named Freshman of the Week two or more times in a season. She's the only player in program history to couple that honor with a Player of the Week selection as well.
The rookie catcher and UNG are back in action this week with a mid-week doubleheader in Chattanooga, Tenn. against Alabama-Huntsville. The Nighthawks will face the Chargers for the second time this season after beating them in a standalone game in the Rocket City Softball Showcase back in February in a 2-1 thriller at Toyota Field. First pitch in the twin billing on Wednesday is set for 2 p.m.
