No. 21 UNG Suffers Close 4-3 Loss At No. 35 Georgia College
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 21 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's tennis team fell 4-3 in a road match in Milledgeville, Ga. against No. 35 Georgia College (GCSU) on Saturday.
With the loss, UNG falls to 9-5 on the season with a 2-2 mark in Peach Belt Conference play. The Bobcats improved to 13-3 in total with a 2-2 record of their own in conference matches.
The Nighthawks fell behind early after GCSU won the #1 and #2 doubles pairings to take the lead in the overall match at 1-0.
With wins at #4 and #3 singles, the Bobcats were suddenly one match away from clinching the victory as they held a 3-0 lead overall.
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) men's singles No. 16 and junior Pedro Liborio steadied things with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in #1 singles to provide some momentum for the Nighthawks.
GCSU ultimately secured the victory in #2 singles with a win from Rodrigo Perez Crespo to clinch the match.
Sophomore Marcos Castellanos and freshman Lleyton Beasley did each add a win in #5 and #6 singles respectively before the day was done.
UNG now looks ahead to another ranked matchup as it will face No. 25 Columbus State in a match that was originally scheduled for this past Friday. Forecasted rain in the northeast Georgia surrounding area moved the match back to Monday, April 14. The Nighthawks will celebrate Senior Day before their final home match of the season starts at 1 p.m.
