Linnikova Named Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player Of The Week
DAHLONEGA – Junior Angelina Linnikova of the No. 3 University of North Georgia women's tennis team has been named by the league office as the Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week as announced Monday.
The Irkutsk, Russia native rewrote the UNG history books as the regular season came to a close last week.
Linnikova had another stellar week last week, going 5-1 overall which included individual wins against No. 22 Mississippi College and No. 14 Columbus State.
Against the Choctaws, she nabbed a #1 singles win as the Nighthawks were victorious in the match to move to 19-0.
Then against the Cougars, she picked up her 18th singles win of the year in the #1 match in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over Mariana Ramirez.
After winning her 19th singles contest of the season, Linnikova then made UNG women's tennis history on Saturday.
As she defeated Georgia College's Jada Young handily in a 6-3, 6-3 victory, Linnikova solidified a 19-2 singles record in the regular season.
Standing now as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) women's singles No. 7 player in the country, Linnikova sits in a tie for the third most singles wins in a season in UNG women's tennis history. Her .905 singles win percentage currently ranks as the best singles season in school history with postseason play around the corner.
At 15-3 (.833) in doubles, she is also currently tied for the second best doubles win percentage in program history.
Linnikova ended the regular season as the best #1 singles player in the PBC with her 19-2 record and .905 win percentage, better than any other conference competitor.
She will look to lead her team to the program's first ever PBC Tournament championship this weekend as the Nighthawks head to Columbus, Ga. for postseason play.
UNG holds the top seed in the tournament as the PBC office will announce seeding, matchups and match times in the near future. The tournament begins on Friday, Apr. 26, however, the Nighthawks hold a first round bye as the top seeded school and will not play until Saturday, Apr. 27.
