Opata Named PBC Baseball Player of the Week

DAHLONEGA -- University of North Georgia (UNG) baseball junior center fielder Andrews Opata has been named as the Peach Belt Conference Baseball Player of the Week via the league's weekly announcement Monday afternoon.

DAHLONEGA -- University of North Georgia (UNG) baseball junior center fielder Andrews Opata has been named as the Peach Belt Conference Baseball Player of the Week via the league's weekly announcement Monday afternoon.

Opata had another monster weekend in UNG's three-game sweep over St. Leo.

UNG's top hitter went 8-for-14 (.571) at the plate with two doubles, a home run, seven runs scored and nine RBI. Opata also was a perfect 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts on the weekend. He only struck out once in 15 plate appearances and recorded multiple hits in all three games played.

After two weeks of play, Opata now leads the Peach Belt Conference in batting average (.478), slugging percentage (.848), on-base plus slugging percentage (1.377), runs scored (21), hits (22), home runs (4) and stolen bases (7). He also ranks second in RBI (17) behind his teammate Phillip Ard and third in on-base percentage (.529).\

Opata and the Nighthawks have four marquee games scheduled this week, the first of which is a rivalry showdown against No. 18 Young Harris on Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. Then UNG will host No. 13 Georgia College for a non-conference series at home beginning on Friday, Feb. 21 and ending on Sunday, Feb. 23. The four matchups against ranked opponents are the first of the season for the Nighthawks and the first of 13 total games scheduled this year against currently ranked opponents.
