Champion, White Named To NABC All-District First Team
DAHLONEGA – University of North Georgia men's basketball junior forward Frank Champion and sophomore point guard AJ White have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District First Team, the association announced Monday.
Martez Brown (Lincoln Memorial), KJ Jones II (Emmanuel) and Donnell Nixon II (Wingate) joined Champion and White on the first team.
Uzziah Dawkins (Converse), Tyler Johnson (USC Aiken), Javeon Jones (Catawba), Jalen McCoy (USC Aiken) and John Zhao (Carson-Newman) were named to the second team.
The First Team selection marks the second consecutive year Champion has been named to the Southeast All-District First Team and the first such career honor for White.
The duo dominated the Southeast Region's Peach Belt Conference in the scoring column this season as Champion ranked No. 2 in the league in points per game (17.5) with White following closely behind at No. 4 with 17.2 points per night.
Champion also led the PBC in assists (152), assists per game (4.8), field goal percentage (58.5 percent), field goals made (207), free throws made (142) while ranking No. 2 in rebounds (246) and rebounds per game (7.7).
The 6-foot-10 forward recorded 10 double-doubles this season, the second most of any player in the league.
In postseason play, Champion has continued his dominance, winning PBC Tournament MVP honors followed by being named to the NCAA Southeast Region All-Tournament Team.
In the six postseason games played by the Nighthawks so far, Champion is averaging 18.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.0 block per game.
White's 567 total points led the conference while he ranked second in made field goals (182), free throws made (136), while finishing third in free throw percentage (84.5 percent) and three-point field goals made (67).
White had standout performances in the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament with back-to-back 20-point games in the first two rounds. He dropped 20 points on 4-of-6 shooting from downtown in the opening win over Wingate and followed that performance with 22 points, five assists and two steals on 7-for-14 shooting from the floor against Catawba.
Champion and White have led UNG to its first ever appearance in Elite Eight at the 2024 NCAA Men's Basketball Championships in Evansville, Ind. The two will look to lead the Nighthawks to a National Semifinal appearance as the team takes on West Texas A&M on Tuesday, Mar. 26 at 9:30 p.m. EST from the Ford Center.
