GAINESVILLE, Ga. – The No. 2 University of North Georgia men's golf team opened up play on day one of the 3rd Annual Mizuno Intercollegiate at Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Ga. Monday morning. The Nighthawks got off to a good start in their home event, posting five individual rounds below par to put themselves in third place behind No. 6 Lincoln Memorial and No. 10 Lee.
As a team, UNG shot 12-under-par to sit just two shots behind LMU and one shot back of Lee. Chattahoochee GC is a 7,166-yard test that a number of Nighthawks passed with flying colors Monday.
The day was highlighted by graduate student Jack Vajda who tied a career best 18-hole score with a six-under-par 66 in the opening round. Vajda posted seven birdies as he tied his own record for the third-best 18-hole score in UNG men's golf history.
In the second round, Vajda finished with a one-under 71, cementing his standing in a tie for second place on the individual leaderboard. The Nighthawk grad student currently sits at seven-under, tied with LMU's Loic Naas and two shots behind No. 19 Columbus State's Bernard Meyer.
Other highlights of the day for UNG included a three-under 69 from sophomore Hunter Smith in round two. With Smith's 72 in the opening loop, he sits in a five-way tie for 11th place after 36 holes.
Seniors Ethan Day (74, 70) and Hughes Threlkeld (71, 73) each finished the day at even par after both posting one round below the line.
Other Nighthawk standouts included junior Connor Horton and senior Myles Jones. The pair also finished the first 36-holes at even par as they also sit at T-29 heading into the final day tomorrow.
