No. 24 Nighthawks Control No. 29 Catawba 4-2 For Victory
Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The No. 24 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's tennis team defeated No. 29 Catawba 4-2 in the 2nd Annual Scenic City College Tennis Spring Break Showcase on Sunday to secure its first win over a nationally ranked opponent this season.
The Nighthawks (6-2, 1-0 Peach Belt) defeated the Indians (6-1, 3-0 South Atlantic) behind big performances in doubles and in the upper singles matches.
First it was the underclassmen duo of sophomore Marcos Castellanos and freshman Franco Rebora who secured a 6-3 win in #3 doubles.
Then junior Pedro Liborio and freshman Janos Varga took down their opponents in the #2 doubles match to secure the point for UNG.
At 1-0 overall, Castellanos continued to roll into singles play as he bested Catawba's Alessandro Valleta 6-1, 6-2 for the victory in #6 singles.
Atop the scoreboard, ITA men's singles No. 10 Liborio added UNG's second singles and third overall point with a smooth 6-2, 6-1 victory, his team-leading sixth of the season.
Senior Robin Eldin then clinched the ranked victory with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Agustin Mastri to continue his five-match singles win streak and clinch the overall win for the Nighthawks.
Now UNG gets ready to conclude its showing in the premier college tennis showcase on Monday, March 10 at 4 p.m. against Lees-McRae.
