No. 6 UNG Improves to 3-0 With Win Over Erskine
DAHLONEGA – The No. 6 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis team improved to 3-0 this season with a 6-1 win over Erskine at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek on Saturday.
Things got a little dicey in the doubles matches on Saturday as UNG needed a tiebreaker win in the #3 doubles match to secure the point.
Senior Angelina Linnikova and Carolina Reis dominated the #1 doubles match for a 6-0 win. However, the Fleet won the #2 doubles match, forcing the single doubles point to be decided by the #3 battle.
In the #3 slot, junior Emily Bush and freshman Linn Goerdes battled with Erskine's Czarina Aguirre and Hanna Vasconez. Eventually Bush and Goerdes pulled out a 7-6 win with a 7-2 victory in the tiebreaker to earn the doubles point for UNG.
In singles UNG cruised through to come away with the victory.
ITA women's singles No. 4 Linnikova pulled out a 7-5, 6-2 win over Vasconez in the #1 spot.
In #2 singles, senior Ashley Moinard picked up her second singles win of the year with a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
Freshman Vasilissa Kupriyanova recovered from a 1-6 loss in the first set to Rupal Kharb in spectacular fashion with dominating 6-1, 6-2 wins in the second and third sets to pull out the victory.
Reis rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win in the #5 singles competition while Bush compiled her second singles win of the year with a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the #6 spot.
Now UNG gets ready for its first ranked test of the season as the team will head on the road to face No. 10 Auburn Montgomery on Friday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. in Montgomery, Ala.
