No. 2 Nighthawks Finish As Runner-Up In Tennessee River Rumble
LENOIR CITY, Tenn. – The No. 2 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's golf team finished in second place at the Tennessee River Rumble at Windriver Golf Club in Lenoir City, Tenn. on Tuesday.
The Nighthawks combined to shoot a 7-over-par 871 in the 20-team event. No. 4 and host Lincoln Memorial won the tournament by one stroke at 6-over. Lenoir-Rhyne came in third place at 14-over while No. 6 Grand Valley State finished in fourth at 15-over.
UNG has now finished third or better in the Tennessee River Rumble in four straight seasons which includes a victory at the event back in 2023 and consecutive runner-up outings in the last two showings.
Senior Hughes Threlkeld was the top finisher for the Nighthawks as he came in seventh place at 1-over for the tournament. Threlkeld had the best performance of the final round with a 2-under 70 at the par-72 Windriver GC.
With three rounds of 74, 73 and 70, the seventh-place finish marks Threlkeld's second top-10 finish of the season and his first the season-opening event at the Bearcat Fall Invitational.
Sophomore Colby Bennett carded a final-round 73 on Tuesday to finish in 16th place in the event. Bennett has now finished in the top 20 or better in all eight events this season for UNG.
Senior Ethan Day and graduate student Jack Vajda both finished in a tie for 23rd place at 5-over for the tournament.
Day shot three rounds of 72, 71 and 78 to mark his eighth top-25 outing of the season.
Vajda had the lowest round of any Nighthawk in the tournament on Monday with a 3-under 69 in the first round. He finished with a 74 and 78 on Tuesday for his sixth top-25 finish on the year.
Junior Hunter Smith had the second-best final round for UNG with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday as he finished in 41st place among the 100-player field.
The Nighthawks will compete in one final regular-season event before postseason play begins. Their final competition of the year takes place April 7-8 at Pensacola Country Club in Pensacola, Fla. as No. 3 West Florida hosts the UWF Argonaut Invitational.
