UNG Defeats GCSU 75-69 In Overtime

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of North Georgia (UNG) men's basketball team came away with a 75-69 overtime victory on the road at Georgia College Wednesday night.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of North Georgia (UNG) men's basketball team came away with a 75-69 overtime victory on the road at Georgia College Wednesday night.

With the win, UNG remains undefeated in Peach Belt Conference play at 3-0 and moves to 11-4 overall on the season.

The Nighthawks came away with the overtime victory behind a big performance from junior guard Cayden Charles who had a game-high 22 points in the win. It was one of Charles' most efficient shooting nights of the season as he went 7-for-12 (58.3 percent) from the floor, 3-for-4 (75 percent) from downtown and 5-for-8 (62.5 percent) at the free throw line.

Charles also added three steals defensively for UNG, giving him 94 steals in his career. That mark is now the fourth-most steals in the NCAA Division II era (2005) of UNG men's basketball history.

Junior guard AJ White also had a big night again with 18 points. The Memphis, Tenn. native is averaging 18.5 points per game over the last four outings for UNG. White also made movements in the UNG record book by going 4-for-4 at the free throw line. He has now made 259 free throws in his career which is good for third in the DII era in program history.

Junior forward Colin Turner picked up his first double-double of the season with a 16-point, 12-rebound performance against the Bobcats. 12 rebounds ties a career-high for the Nighthawk big man.

UNG was able to come away with the win Wednesday despite an impressive comeback effort from the Bobcats.

In the first half, the Nighthawks took advantage of a 9-0 run to take a 13-point lead with 4:31 to go. It was their largest lead of the game. They would eventually take a 35-27 edge into the locker room at halftime.

GCSU came out of the gates firing in the second half. The Bobcats converted on four of their first six shots, going on a 9-2 run to make it a 37-36 ballgame.

With 12:46 to go, UNG had built its largest lead of the second half at seven points. However, GCSU quickly got back into the game again with three-pointers on consecutive possessions making it a 47-46 game in favor of the Nighthawks with 9:56 to play.

As the Bobcats remained close, a late run from UNG looked like it would put the game away for good. Leading 53-50, the Nighthawks put together a quick 8-0 run to lead by 11 points with just 5:05 remaining.

Yet GCSU would knock down a three-pointer on three of its next four possessions to get right back into the game. A Bobcat free throw with 1:25 left tied the game at 61-61. Neither team would score for the rest of regulation and the game went into overtime.

In overtime, UNG's aggressive offense led to numerous free throw attempts. 10 of the Nighthawks' 14 points in overtime came at the charity stripe. Meanwhile, the Bobcats only went 3-for-9 in overtime thanks to some stifling defense from UNG. The Nighthawks would eventually come away with a six-point win.

Now UNG returns home and will get ready to face No. 25 Columbus State on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 3:30 p.m.
