No. 2 Nighthawks Land Third Place Finish At Intercollegiate At Nemacolin

FARMINGTON, Pa. – The No. 2 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's golf team finished in third place at the Intercollegiate at Nemacolin in Farmington, Pa. to close the book on another successful fall season Tuesday afternoon.

FARMINGTON, Pa. – The No. 2 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's golf team finished in third place at the Intercollegiate at Nemacolin in Farmington, Pa. to close the book on another successful fall season Tuesday afternoon.

The third place finish marks seven consecutive finishes of third place or better for the Nighthawks. In the last 17 events, UNG has finished worse than third place just twice. In that span, the Nighthawks have an astonishing average placement of 1.94.

In Pennsylvania, it was No. 7 Grand Valley State who took home the crown with a combined score of 12-under-par. No. 23 Missouri-St. Louis finished in second place at one-under, followed by UNG in third at seven-over.

Graduate student Jack Vajda served as the trailblazer for UNG at the par-72, 7,118-yard Nemacolin Woodlands Resort this week. Vajda finished T-7 with a combined score of one-over after shooting a 75 on Tuesday. Vajda has now placed eighth or better in seven of his last nine tournaments.

Vajda was followed by a trio of Nighthawks all finishing in a tie for 12th place. Senior Hughes Threlkeld, junior Hunter Smith and sophomore Colby Bennett each shot four-over in the 36-hole tournament to secure a top-15 individual finish.

Smith used his lowest round of the tournament, a three-under-par 69, on the final day of competition to earn his third consecutive top 15 finish this season. The 12th place finish for Threlkeld and Bennett is each their second top 15 appearance and second-best finish of the year.

Bennett's four-under 68 in round two was the low round of the event for UNG and tied for the third-lowest round in the entire field.

Despite the third place finish, the Intercollegiate at Nemacolin marks the only tournament so far this season in which the Nighthawks have had four golfers place inside the top 15 of the individual leaderboard.

Now, UNG will rest and gear up for the spring season in which it looks to head back to the National Championship where it finished as National Champion Runner-Up last season.
