Sandoval Named Chick-fil-A Nighthawk of the Week

DAHLONEGA -- University of North Georgia (UNG) freshman striker Jorge Sandoval has been named as the Chick-fil-A Nighthawk of the Week after helping his team to a key victory over Flagler on Saturday.

Sandoval's game-winning goal in UNG's 2-1 triumph over Flagler is surely a candidate for goal of the year within the conference.

After numerous failed chances to score late in the game, the Nighthawks began to come to grips with the consequences of a draw against another one of the top teams in the Peach Belt Conference. Instead, with less than a minute remaining, Sandoval flipped the script. As he tracked the ball over his shoulder on a throw-in pass from sophomore Aram Lara, Sandoval prepared to strike. From outside the box on the far side, Sandoval fired a shot on one touch. The ball quickly soared into the air, appearing to veer off target. As it reached its apex, the ball quickly dove back towards the goal and into the back of the net in the bottom corner.

The goal, Sandoval's second of the year, gave UNG a 2-1 lead with 27 seconds left that would ultimately lead to the victory. A victory that would help UNG secure the top spot in the PBC standings with 16 points, one point ahead of Flagler and Clayton State.

The victory secures a Nighthawk sweep of the Saints in the regular season. It's the first time in program history UNG has defeated Flagler twice in a single season. It also extends the Nighthawk winning streak to three games over the Saints, the longest such mark in program history.

Now Sandoval and the Nighthawks will prepare to face Clayton State on the road in Morrow, Ga. on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m.

The Nighthawk of the Week title sponsor is Chick-fil-A of Dahlonega, with each week's winner being treated to a complimentary combo meal at the Dahlonega restaurant. Located at 488 Morrison Moore Parkway East, Chick-fil-A loves to give back to the local area and is proud to be a community partner with UNG Athletics.

Beginning in the fall of 2014, the UNG athletic department began honoring one student-athlete each Monday morning as the Nighthawk of the Week. The award is chosen each Sunday evening by an award selection committee made up of members of the UNG athletics administrative staff.
