No. 24 UNG Finishes Scenic City Showcase With Win Over Bobcats
Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The No. 24 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's tennis team grabbed its third win in the 2nd Annual Scenic City College Tennis Spring Break Showcase in Chattanooga, Tenn. Monday by defeating Lees-McRae 4-0 at the Champions Club Tennis Complex at Rivermont Park.
The Nighthawks (8-2, 1-0 Peach Belt) finish the showcase with a 2-1 record after picking up wins over No. 29 Catawba and the Bobcats (5-3, 1-0 Conference Carolinas).
Monday's win came at the hands of doubles domination and a trio of wins in the back half of singles play.
In doubles, UNG's #1 pairing of senior Robin Eldin and freshman Juan Cruz Blanco did not drop a set as they cruised to a 6-0 victory.
Junior Pedro Liborio and freshman Janos Varga only dropped one set in the #2 match as they also rolled to a 6-1 victory to close out the doubles portion of the match.
Junior Eliseo Alcalde earned the second point of the day for the Nighthawks with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Tenzin Dorji in the #6 singles battle. The win marked the second of the year for Alcalde.
Freshman Franco Rebora grabbed his fourth win of the season with a 7-6 (7-1 tiebreaker), 6-2 victory in the #3 singles match.
Following Rebora almost instantly was sophomore Marcos Castellanos in #5 singles. Castellanos breezed past Andres Tallafio 6-0, 6-2 to clinch the victory for UNG.
Now the Nighthawks eye their toughest challenge yet this season. Next Sunday, March 16, UNG welcomes No. 1 West Florida to Dahlonega, Ga. for an 11 a.m. match at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek. The Argonauts are 11-1 this year after starting the season with 11 straight victories.
