No. 5 Nighthawks Win PBC Opener 5-2 at Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 5 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis team picked up its first Peach Belt Conference win of the season in a 5-2 victory at Augusta Sunday afternoon.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The No. 5 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's tennis team picked up its first Peach Belt Conference win of the season in a 5-2 victory at Augusta Sunday afternoon.

The Nighthawks (7-2, 1-0 Peach Belt) took down the Jaguars (7-3, 0-1 Peach Belt) behind a win in doubles and four singles wins.

In the #2 doubles, senior Ashley Moinard and freshman Vasilissa Kupriyanova pulled out an easy 6-2 win to give UNG the advantage. 

Senior Angelina Linnikova and freshman Linn Goerdes then rolled to a 6-3 win in the #1 doubles match to clinch the double point for the Nighthawks and put them ahead 1-0 in the overall match. 

Kupriyanova took the momentum from her doubles victory into a 6-4, 6-2 win in #4 singles over Augusta's Priscilla Landi. Kupriyanova is now 5-2 in singles matches this season.

In #2 singles, Moinard cruised to her sixth win of the season with a 6-2, 6-1 drubbing of Juliana Martinez. 

ITA women's singles No. 4 Linnikova remained undefeated (8-0) in singles action this season with an efficient 6-1, 6-1 win in #1 singles against Andrea Gonzalez. Of the top 10 women's singles competitors in the country, Linnikova is one of only three that has remained unbeaten this spring. Of the three players without a loss, she's the only to compete in more than five singles matches so far this year.

Freshman Victoria Niox-Chateau clinched the 5-2 win for UNG with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Camila Taborga in the first singles win of her career.

Now the Nighthawks will prepare to host the 2nd Annual Scenic City College Tennis Spring Break Showcase in Chattanooga, Tenn. The nine-team premier event takes place over three days from Mar. 8-11. UNG's first match is set for Saturday, Mar. 8 at 10 a.m. against Lee
