Jones Named Chick-fil-A Nighthawk of the Week
DAHLONEGA -- No. 5 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's basketball freshman guard Averie Jones has been named as the Chick-fil-A Nighthawk of the Week after three strong performances last week for the Nighthawks.
Jones had her best performance of the season in a stellar trio of outings. The rookie started play on Monday with 10 points, six rebounds and five assists against Columbus State.
In a dominating win over Lander on Wednesday, Jones scored a career-high 28 points with remarkable shooting numbers. She went 9-of-14 (64.3 percent) from the floor and 7-for-11 (63.6 percent) from downtown. Her seven made three-pointers are tied for the third-most in a game in the NCAA Division II era (2005) in program history.
On Saturday against USC Beaufort, Jones reached double figures for the 10th time this season with 14 points on 5-of-9 (55.6 percent) shooting overall with a 3-of-6 mark from deep. She averaged 17.3 points in total on the week while shooting 47.5 percent from the floor and 45.4 percent from three-point land.
Jones is averaging 12.4 points per game this season which ranks No. 14 in the PBC and No. 1 among all freshmen in the conference. Only one underclassman is averaging more than Jones this year.
Jones and company are back in action this week on Wednesday as UNG hits the road to take on Georgia Southwestern. Tip of on Jan. 22 against the Hurricanes is set for 5:30 p.m.
The Nighthawk of the Week title sponsor is Chick-fil-A of Dahlonega, with each week's winner being treated to a complimentary combo meal at the Dahlonega restaurant. Located at 488 Morrison Moore Parkway East, Chick-fil-A loves to give back to the local area and is proud to be a community partner with UNG Athletics.
Beginning in the fall of 2014, the UNG athletic department began honoring one student-athlete each Monday morning as the Nighthawk of the Week. The award is chosen each Sunday evening by an award selection committee made up of members of the UNG athletics administrative staff.
