No. 6 UNG Pulls Out 80-75 Road Win At Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 6 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's basketball team pulled out an 80-75 win at Georgia College Wednesday evening.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 6 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's basketball team pulled out an 80-75 win at Georgia College Wednesday evening.

The Nighthawks are now 13-0 overall on the season and 3-0 in conference play.

Wednesday's contest was a hard fought battle on both sides that saw the Nighthawks comeback in the second half to retake the lead and eventually pull away from the Bobcats.

As a team, UNG had six players score eight or more points in the win. The Nighthawks have now scored 80 or more points in four games this season. They came away with the win in Milledgeville, Ga. despite conceding a season-high 75 points to the Bobcats.

Graduate guard Caroline Martin led UNG in scoring with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting, marking her seventh 20-point outing of the year. It was also the fourth time in which she shot 50 percent or better from the field. Martin also added a team-high seven rebounds in the win.

Graduate guard Emily Trushel had a good night with 16 points, four boards and five assists. She was perfect at the free throw line, converting a season-high seven made free throws.

Sophomore forward Kendall Emener was the third and final Nighthawk to reach double figures, totaling 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting with a 3-for-4 mark at the charity stripe.

UNG also received some key contributions off the bench that helped lead to the win.

In the midst of their comeback in the second half, the Nighthawks welcomed the presence of senior guard Carly Fahey. She scored a season high nine points, all of which came from beyond the three-point line to help UNG retake the lead.

Sophomore forward Ava McGlockton snared six rebounds in her 13 minutes of action Wednesday. It's the second-most rebounds she's grabbed in a game this year. In the last three outings, McGlockton is averaging 5.3 rebounds per contest.

A back and forth first quarter resulted in a slim 18-16 lead for UNG. However, GCSU controlled the action in the second quarter, out-scoring the Nighthawks 25-21 to take a 41-39 lead into the locker room at halftime. Georgia College knocked down a startling five triples in the second quarter alone, contributing to its high offensive production.

The Bobcats led by as many as six points in the second quarter and would hold a lead all the way until the 2:47 mark in the third quarter. A layup from Martin at that time gave the Nighthawks a 54-53 lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

With its best offensive quarter of the night coming in the final quarter, UNG scored 22 points and led by as much as eight to distance itself from GCSU. Still, the Bobcats hung around converting on a number of three-pointers to keep the game within single digits.

The Nighthawks held strong by going 7-for-8 at the free throw line as a team in the fourth quarter to outlast GCSU 80-75.

Now UNG will return home to Lynn Cottrell Arena at the UNG Convocation Center on Saturday, Jan. 11 to take on Columbus State at 1:30 p.m. A win against the Cougars would tie the best start to a season in program history (14-0) which last happened during the 1986-87 season.
