No. 8 North Georgia Claims Outright Conference Championship In Dominating Fashion

DAHLONEGA – The No. 8 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's basketball team claimed the outright Peach Belt Conference Regular-season Championship with an 82-53 win at USC Aiken on Wednesday night.

DAHLONEGA – The No. 8 University of North Georgia (UNG) women's basketball team claimed the outright Peach Belt Conference Regular-season Championship with an 82-53 win at USC Aiken on Wednesday night.

The Nighthawks are now 25-2 on the year and 15-2 in PBC play. Perhaps more impressively was the history the team made with the victory over the Pacers (6-21, 3-14).

With the victory, UNG moved to 11-0 on the road this season. It marks the first time in program history that the Nighthawks have completed the regular season unbeaten on the road.

The 15 conference wins for head coach Buffie Burson's squad also marks the staggering ninth time her teams have done that since the turn of the century.

Wednesday's win was highlighted by a team effort in every facet of the game.

On defense, senior guard Ansley Hall snatched the ball from USC Aiken three times in the first quarter. These takeaways often led to assists on the other end. Hall finished the night with a game-high six assist and three steals as she added seven points of her own.

Many of Hall's assists were dished to sophomore forwards Kendall Emener and Ava McGlockton. Emener had eight points, five rebounds, one assist, a steal, no turnovers and shot 4-for-4 in a statistically flawless. She wasn't the only player that was flawless.

McGlockton shined as she scored a career-high 17 points on a perfect 8-for-8 shooting performance from the floor. The performance tied former Nighthawk Deana Blankenship and Emener for the best field goal percentage outing in a single game (minimum eight attempts) in the NCAA Division II era in UNG women's basketball history.

However, McGlockton had to share the spotlight as graduate guard Caroline Martin too finished with a game-high 17 points in the victory. The reigning PBC Player of the Week knocked down seven of her 17 shot attempts en route to her 23rd double-digit scoring outburst of the year.

Of course graduate guard Emily Trushel would not go quietly into the night against her former school. The former Pacer who transferred to Dahlonega as a graduate student two years ago was held in check for most of the game. Then the fourth quarter came around.

Trushel buried two threes as she scored 10 points in the frame to finish with 13 in total. She also led UNG with seven rebounds while adding three assists.

Junior guard Jaleah Storr joined Trushel in the fourth-quarter fun as she scored eight of her 11 points in the quarter to keep her team's foot on the pedal to the finish line.

The 29-point victory marked the Nighthawks' second-largest margin of victory in a conference win of the season and their largest on the road.

UNG's 56.7 percent field goal percentage, 40.8 percent performance from three-point range and 25 total assists were all the second-best in any game this season.

UNG is eyeing more history with a potential Senior Day win over Clayton State on Saturday, Mar. 1 at Lynn Cottrell Arena at the UNG Convocation Center. A victory would make the Nighthawks 26-2 through 28 games for just the second time in program history. Tip off in the regular-season finale begins in Dahlonega at 1:30 p.m.
