No. 3 Nighthawks Lose First Match Of Season 4-3 At No. 14 Columbus State
COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 3 University of North Georgia women's tennis lost its first match of the season on the road at No. 14 Columbus State 4-3 Friday afternoon. The loss makes UNG 19-1 on the year and 4-1 in Peach Belt Conference. It also snapped the Nighthawks' program record of 19 consecutive wins.
It all started in doubles play for UNG, as the Nighthawks lost the doubles point early for just the second time this year. Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) women's doubles No. 2 Mariana Ramirez and Nikoline Gullacksen took down the No. 41 Nighthawk tag team of seniors Viktorie Wojcikova and Johanna Lippert in a 6-4 win.
UNG got a big win in the #2 doubles spot from junior Angelina Linnikova and senior Svetlana Teterina as they took the contest 6-1.
The split in the first two doubles matches meant the #3 contest would be the decisive one for the early doubles point. Senior Valentina Ascarrunz and junior Carolina Reis took on Agostina Bigotti and Laura Pescikova in a thrilling match that saw the Cougars emerge victorious 7-6 (7-4 tiebreaker).
Into singles play CSU led 1-0 but Ascarrunz got the point back quickly with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the #6 singles match.
The Cougars pulled back in front with a 6-2, 6-0 win for ITA women's singles No. 20 Gullacksen over Wojcikova in the #2 competition.
CSU's Isadora Oliveira Marcondes followed that with a 7-6 (7-4 tiebreaker), 6-0 win in the #3 singles over Lippert.
With a 3-1 lead, the Cougars needed one more singles win to clinch the victory. They got it from Yelana Labat in the #5 singles match over Teterina as Labat won 6-4, 6-4.
Junior Ashley Moinard was able to grab a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win for UNG in the #4 match while ITA women's singles No. 7 Linnikova won her 18th singles contest of the year with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win in the #1 match.
Now the Nighthawks will look to cap off a historic regular season with one final home match tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 20. The team will celebrate Senior Day at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek with a 1 p.m. match against Georgia College. The program's four seniors will be honored on court 1 prior to the match's start.
