Knowles Named Chick-fil-A Nighthawk of the Week
DAHLONEGA -- No. 8 University of North Georgia (UNG) softball freshman catcher Carleigh Knowles has been named as the Chick-fil-A Nighthawk of the Week after another collection of outstanding performances last week.
Knowles astonished audiences this weekend with an incredible performance in a weekend sweep of Georgia College.
In the opener of the series on Friday, Knowles blasted two home runs as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs in a 13-6 win.
She came back less than 24 hours later and belted three more home runs in a doubleheader.
In total for the week, Knowles went 9-for-15 (.660) at the dish with nine runs scored, a double, five home runs and a whopping 12 RBIs. She posted a 1.667 slugging percentage (SLG) for the week.
She sent the ball (well) over the fence in 55.6 percent of at bats against the Bobcats, totaling a 2.667 SLG on the weekend alone.
Knowles now has 17 homers on the season which is tied for the most in the country among all NCAA Division-II hitters. It also ties the NCAA era program record for the third most home runs in a season. The current record for most homers stands at 19 and Knowles is on pace to break that before the regular season ends.
The true freshman ranks third in the league in batting average (.442) and leads the conference in SLG (.967), on-base plus slugging (1.448), RBIs (52) and home runs. She also ranks second in runs scored at 45.
This is already the second time in her career that Knowles has won the Nighthawk of the Week award. She previously earned the honor back on March 3.
The Nighthawk of the Week title sponsor is Chick-fil-A of Dahlonega, with each week's winner being treated to a complimentary combo meal at the Dahlonega restaurant. Located at 488 Morrison Moore Parkway East, Chick-fil-A loves to give back to the local area and is proud to be a community partner with UNG Athletics.
Beginning in the fall of 2014, the UNG athletic department began honoring one student-athlete each Monday morning as the Nighthawk of the Week. The award is chosen each Sunday evening by an award selection committee made up of members of the UNG athletics administrative staff.
