Ascarrunz Named Chick-fil-a Nighthawk of the Week
DAHLONEGA – University of North Georgia women's tennis senior Valentina Ascarrunz has been named as the Chick-fil-a Nighthawk of the Week after her performance in the 2024 Peach Belt Conference women's tennis tournament over the weekend.
Ascarrunz earned a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1 tiebreaker) win over Flagler's Toni Pfeiffer in the #6 singles match.
After the Nighthawks lost the #1 and #3 doubles matches in the Peach Belt Conference Women's Tennis tournament, they would need four singles wins to comeback and beat the Saints for the title. After wins in the #2, #4 and #5 singles matches, Ascarrunz had an opportunity to clinch the first title in program history.
She won the first set 6-1, but was forced into a tiebreaker in the second set. She handled her opponent 7-1 in the tiebreaker to clinch the win and help the Nighthawks hoist the PBC Tournament trophy for the first time ever.
The clinching victory was Ascarrunz's first match-clinching singles win in her collegiate tennis career.
The Nighthawk of the Week title sponsor is Chick-fil-A of Dahlonega, with each week's winner being treated to a complimentary combo meal at the Dahlonega restaurant. Located at 488 Morrison Moore Parkway East, Chick-fil-A loves to give back to the local area and is proud to be a community partner with UNG Athletics.
Beginning in the fall of 2014, the UNG athletic department began honoring one student-athlete each Monday morning as the Nighthawk of the Week. The award is chosen each Sunday evening by an award selection committee made up of members of the UNG athletics administrative staff.
