No. 2 UNG Lurking In Fourth Place At UWF Argonaut Invitational
PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 2 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's golf team is in fourth place at the UWF Argonaut Invitational after the first two rounds of play Monday at Pensacola Country Club in Pensacola, Fla.
No. 9 Georgia Southwestern sits in first place after posting a combined team score of 24-under par after the first 36 holes. No. 3 and host West Florida (UWF) sits two shots back of the Hurricanes at 22-under. No. 13 Columbus State landed 11 shots behind the Argonauts and two shots in front of the Nighthawks with an 11-under score after day one.
Sophomore Colby Bennet highlighted the day by reporting a six-under 66 scorecard in the opening round. The Greensboro, Ga. native recorded seven birdies as he tied the tournament-low round on the first day at the 6,903-yard, par-72 Pensacola CC.
Bennett's 66 is tied as the third-best individual 18-hole score in program history.
The performance was Bennett's sixth round in the 60s this season. With an even-par 72 in round two, he sits in fifth place as the highest-standing Nighthawk on the individual leaderboard after Monday.
Senior Ethan Day had a stellar 36 holes as well. He entered the clubhouse one shot behind Bennett with a 5-under 67 and an even-par 72 in the opening rounds. Day rallied on the back nine in round one with four birdies in a five-hole span to post his seventh sub-70 round this season.
Graduate student Jack Vajda was the only other UNG golfer to finish in the negatives on Monday. He posted a pair of 1-under 71s in each round to finish the day in 20th place at 2-under. His 71 in round two was the only round below par for the Nighthawks on the second loop.
Junior Hunter Smith finalized the scoring at 4-over in 50th place on the individual leaderboard.
The Nighthawks will look to rally for their third consecutive top 3 finish when the final round tees off Tuesday morning.
