No. 25 Nighthawks Flex Toughness In 4-1 Win Over Tigers
ROME, Ga. – The No. 25 University of North Georgia (UNG) men's golf team picked up a strong 4-1 win in a neutral-site match with West Alabama (UWA) at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga. on Tuesday.
The Nighthawks (9-4, 2-1 Peach Belt) perhaps rode their momentum from a recent victory at Lander to the comfortable defeat of the Tigers (6-10, 2-4 Gulf South) on Tuesday.
UNG's victory in the midweek match was highlighted by a stellar victory in the #1 doubles match that led to an early point for the Nighthawks.
After UWA and UNG split the #2 and #3 contests, the key doubles point would be decided in the headliner.
This posed an advantage for the Tigers as they trotted out the Intercollegiate Tennis Associaiton's (ITA) No. 15-ranked doubles pairing of Afonoso Portugal and Tomas Almeida.
Nighthawk senior Robin Eldin and freshman Juan Cruz Blanco were not fazed however. The duo took control of the match and earned their first win over a ranked opponent this season with a thrilling 6-4 victory.
Then in singles, UNG remarkably earned three victories despite all three players in the #3, #4 and #5 matches losing a set.
Freshman Franco Rebora took set one from Almeida 6-3 but dropped the second set 2-6. In the finale, Rebora pulled away easily with a 6-1 victory.
In #4 singles, Blanco fell behind in the first set 5-7 to UWA's Vilislav Bonev. He flexed his muscles in the final two sets in dominating fashion with a 6-1 and 6-3 victory to take the match.
Sophomore Marcos Castellanos also dropped the first set of his match in #5 singles. Sebastiao Vilas won the first set 6-3 as Castellanos fell behind. Similarly to Blanco, he too rebounded with a roar by taking both the second and third sets 6-1.
The victory marks the second straight for the Nighthawks who appear to be picking up steam as the regular season nears its conclusion.
The squad will return home for their next match on Friday, April 11. The final home match of the season and Senior Day will take place in Dahlonega from the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek at 2 p.m.
