No. 3 Nighthawks Race By GCSU 4-0, Will Play No. 8 Flagler In PBC Championship
COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 3 University of North Georgia women's tennis team rolled to an easy 4-0 win over Georgia College in its semifinal match of the 2024 Peach Belt Women's Tennis Tournament. The top-seeded Nighthawks will face second-seeded Flagler in the PBC Championship tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 28 at 10 a.m.
After beating the Bobcats 6-1 seven days ago in Dahlonega on Senior Day, UNG continued its trend of dominance with a quick win over fourth-seeded GCSU in Columbus, Ga. Saturday.
Easy 6-2 and 6-1 wins in the #2 and #3 doubles matches respectively led to the quick doubles point in the match for the Nighthawks.
In the #1 singles match, Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) women's singles No. 8 Angelina Linnikova took down her opponent 6-2, 6-2 for the victory. The junior now has 20 singles wins on the season, moving her to third all-time for singles wins in a season in program history.
Linnikova's quick victory was followed by wins in the #5 and #6 singles spots for UNG from seniors Svetlana Teterina and Valentina Ascarrunz.
Ascarrunz made quick work of GCSU's Laura Almagro with a 6-1, 6-0 win for her 18th singles victory of the season.
Minutes later, Teterina took down Shrada Chhabra 6-0, 6-4 to collect her 13th singles win of the season, clinching the match for the Nighthawks.
With the win, UNG moves one step closer to adding another achievement to the already long list of historic milestones met this season. While the Nighthawks have finished as the tournament Runner-Up twice in the last five seasons, they have never hoisted the PBC Tournament trophy.
Last year, UNG fell 4-1 to Flagler in the PBC Championship to finish as the runner-up. The Nighthawks and Saints faced each other back on Apr. 6 in the regular season as UNG emerged victorious 5-2 against a Flagler team reportedly missing some starters due to injury. Last time, the Nighthawks won the #1 and #3 doubles matches as well as the #1, #2, #3 and #4 singles contests.
The Championship starts in Columbus, Ga. tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 28 at 10 a.m.
