Buresi Named PBC Defender of the Week
DAHLONEGA -- University of North Georgia (UNG) women's soccer junior defender Alizee Buresi has been named as the Peach Belt Conference Defender of the Week after a pair of stellar performances for the Nighthawks. The league office made the announcement Monday afternoon.
In two games against some of the top scorers in the nation, Buresi anchored a back line that allowed just one goal over 180 minutes.
In arguably one of the most impressive defensive performances of the season this week, Buresi started things on Wednesday against Clayton State. She played all 90 minutes in a 3-0 win over the Lakers who touted the nation's leading goal scorer in Carrie Consolino. The striker entered the game leading the nation in goals and points while ranking second in the NCAA in goals and points per game and sixth in shots per game. Against Buresi, Consolino did not register a single shot. In fact, Clayton State as a team only mustered one attempt the entire game.
Three days later, Buresi again played all 90 minutes as the Nighthawks held the nation's best offensive team to its lowest output of the season. Against No. 2 Columbus State, the UNG back line held the Cougars to season lows in goals, shots, points and shots on goal. CSU entered the game leading the nation in all four categories before pulling out a 1-0 victory after a controversial goal.
Buresi becomes the second Nighthawk to earn a weekly honor from the conference office this season. She's the first Defender of the Week for UNG since her fellow teammate Cat Watry won the award last season back on Oct. 23.
Buresi and the Nighthawks will now prepare for a blockbuster non-conference match as the Nighthawks will welcome No. 6 Lenoir-Rhyne to the UNG Soccer Field at Lynn Cottrell Park in Dahlonega on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. The contest will serve as UNG's annual Black Out game.
