Sosa Named Peach Belt Conference Baseball Player of the Week
DAHLONEGA – University of North Georgia baseball junior outfielder Josh Sosa has been named as the Peach Belt Conference Baseball Player of the Week as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
Sosa had arguably the best weekend of his career as the Nighthawks took a road series from USC Aiken book ended by a pair of wins.
Before the weekend, Sosa went 1-for-2 with two RBI and three runs scored in a midweek, 21-2 shellacking over No. 10 Lee.
He then recorded a hit and a run in game one's 9-6 win over the Pacers.
Then, in a double header split on Saturday, Sosa exploded at the plate. In game one he went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. In the second game of the day, he recorded another three hits, adding three runs and a pair of extra base hits which included a clutch home run, his fourth of the season, as UNG went on to take the game 6-5.
In total on the week, the junior went 8-for-16 (.500), with seven RBI and a home run.
Monday marks the first conference honor of any kind for Sosa, a Snellville, Ga. native. He's seen an increased role both in the field and at the plate with late-season injuries affecting the Nighthawks.
Since April, the corner outfielder has gone 17-for-49 (.347) at the plate with 19 RBI, 14 runs scored and four home runs.
Sosa will look to continue helping his team this weekend as they will play in a decisive final series against Georgia College to end the regular season. As it stands, the winner of the series between the tied-for-second-place Bobcats and Nighthawks will host a portion of the opening weekend of the PBC Tournament. Both teams are 16-8 in conference play on the year.
The series begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 26 from Bob Stein Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park.
