No. 19 Nighthawks Earn Second Place In 2025 SoCon Championship
STATESBORO, Ga. – The No. 19 University of North Georgia (UNG) rifle team will bring some hardware back to Dahlonega after finishing in second place at the 2025 Southern Conference (SoCon) Championship.
This marks UNG's ninth consecutive season finishing third or better in the conference championship and its eight time in that same stretch finishing second or better.
On Sunday, the Nighthawks secured a runner-up finish in the aggregate championship after finishing in second place in the Air Rifle discipline on Sunday and the Smallbore discipline on Saturday.
UNG posted an aggregate score of 4,616 to finish in second behind No. 4 Georgia Southern who won the event for the fourth consecutive season with an aggregate outing of 4,718.
Sunday's Air Rifle competition saw UNG take second place after posting a 2,344 score, just behind Georgia Southern at 2,384.
Individually, junior Maya Cameron shined during the conference championship weekend as she qualified for the finals in both Smallbore and Air Rifle. Cameron came in seventh place out of eight competitors in both disciplines this weekend. She compiled an aggregate score of 1,169 points to finish sixth overall on the aggregate leaderboard.
UNG freshman Alison Sutherlin posted a 586 in Air Rifle on Sunday which was good for second-best on the team.
The rookie shooter has been a standout for the Nighthawks this season and her efforts earned her the title of Co-Freshman of the Year the SoCon announced Sunday. Sutherlin shared the title of top freshman of the year with Georgia Southern's Emme Walrath.
With the SoCon Championship wrapped up, UNG now looks forward to an exciting trip to West Point, N.Y. as the program will take on Army on Saturday, Feb. 15.
